Background
Languaging Diversity is the itinerating conference of the I-Land Interuniversity Research Centre, an international independent and interdisciplinary center for advanced studies in Linguistics, Social Sciences and the Humanities with a focus on the key notions of identity and diversity, from a linguistic, cultural, and gender studies perspective, in and across cultures. Following the six successful events hosted by the Universities of Naples (2013), Catania (2014), Macerata (2016), Cagliari (2017), Antwerp (2018) and Teruel (2019), the seventh edition of the Languaging Diversity conference (LD2021) will be organized by the University of Lille, France. Due to the COVID-19 ongoing pandemic, the event will be held exclusively online via the virtual conference management platform Underline.
Conference theme “The Linguistic Construction of Emotional Challenges in a Changing Society”
Focus The 7th edition of the Languaging Diversity conference focuses on the emotional challenges that result from the most recent social transformations, and on the way such experiences are expressed in discourse. The extreme social innovations of the last two decades, which have also been brought about by digital communication, are fundamentally altering the way we live and relate to one another in the sphere of work, civic participation, education and learning, affect and sexuality, healthcare and well-being. In their scale and complexity, these social transformations inevitably generate emotional experiences that require to be expressed in language. Some of these emotions, be they negative or positive, are so novel that they still lack a specific linguistic designation, or discursive representation. Conversely, some existing linguistic constructions used to describe an emotional experience may be ‘ageing’ due to the incredible speed of contemporary social change, and need to be made purposeful again in the light of the processes of variation and/or digitalization of the genres within which they occur. Other categories of emotions may simply not be discursively represented at all, because associated to taboo topics in our society (such as mental health or grief). The advent of online communities plays an interesting role in this respect, as they become safe arenas where so far silenced feelings are finally ‘voiced’ and acknowledged by users and their networked audience. In online discussion fora for example, where people who have endured similar experiences unite, stigma and shame give way to the need to communicate and reify these emotions by means of lexical items chosen by the members of the online support group themselves (a case in point are the online discussions of bereaved parents’ community in search of a neologism to designate - and give recognition to - their status as parents). The LD2021 conference convenors invite papers and posters that investigate the intersection of emotion, communication and social change, also within the framework of digital communication. The papers and posters presented at the LD2021 conference will explore the expression of emotion(s) at the different levels of linguistic description (phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexical, semantic, pragmatic, discursive), and in texts and contexts related to traditional and digital genres in different domains, including (but not restricted to) health, medicine and science, media, politics, the law, academia, the world of corporate and institutional work, education and learning. Given the high transdisciplinary nature of the LD2021 conference theme, innovative methodological approaches in relation to the macro thematic frameworks listed below are particularly welcome.

Thematic frameworks LD2021 welcomes proposals addressing the linguistic representation of emotional challenges within one of the following (non-exhaustive) thematic frameworks:

Submissions The LD2021 conference invites two categories of presentation:
Paper presentations, to be scheduled in parallel sessions, will last 20 minutes. Digital posters will be published on the Underline platform before the beginning of the conference and will involve a three-minute online presentation, with an interactive Q&A session. When submitting, please indicate in the first line of the abstract whether the proposal is for a paper or a poster presentation. Abstracts should be between 500 and 800 words for oral papers and between 400 and 500 words for digital posters, references excluded. Abstracts should provide a clear outline of the aim of the study, including clearly articulated research question(s), details of the theoretical approach(es), method(s) and data sources, analytical focus and relevance of results (if already available). Both types of submission should include a list of references. Please note that all submitted abstracts of papers and posters for the LD2021 conference will undergo a blind review process. Abstracts are to be submitted via https://ld2021.sciencesconf.org/user/submissions by 1st March 22 March 2021 (extended deadline)
Publications The online platform Underline provides the speakers with the opportunity of assigning a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) to their recorded presentation given at the LD2021 conference. Upon your approval, this video will be made freely accessible on the Underline archives server. It can then be used as an entry in the authors’ CV and as proof of their research to prevent content theft. A selection of papers will be published in an edited volume and/or in a special issue of a scientific journal.
Important dates
Registration fee The early bird registration fee (from 30 April to 30 August 2021) is 50 EURO. The late registration fee (after 30 August 2021) is 70 EURO. A reduced fee of 35 EURO applies to students. Please check our Conference website for registration details (link to Scienceconf.org HERE).
